The “Real” of “Real Estate”
The “real” of “real estate” is derived from the Latin word “res” or “rei”, meaning “thing”. Land and its improvements were called “real property”, or “immovable property”.
The “real” of “real estate” is not at all related to “royal” (in Portuguese, “real”).
